The area that became the city of Amherst was brought from the native Indians in 1658 and the first settlers came in 1727. Home to three colleges including University of Massachusetts, the city is the place where Emily Dickenson lived and died. 1. Visit the house of Emily Dickenson: Visit the house of one of the all time great American poets Emily Dickenson. Turned into a museum, the house offers various tours to show how she lived. There is also a gift shop attached to it. 2. See the history of Amherst in Amherst History Museum: The museum is housed in the Strong House dating back to 1750 and shows the growth of Amherst from its colonial past to present. The artifacts here range from ordinary to unique and show the 300 year old history of the town. 3. Cycle along the Norwottuck Rail Trail: It is an 8.5 mile path along the former Boston and Main railroad. The track is excellent for walking, is wheelchair accessible and good spot for cross country skiing. 4. See an old New England village: Visit the historic Deerfield for the museums and galleries located within this National Historic Landmark to get a feel of life that was there centuries ago. 5. Play a round of Golf: Play a round of golf in the Cherry Hill Golf course located near the University of Massachusetts is a nine hole golf course that offers great scenic beauty.
