Haverhill is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, situated on the Merrimack River. The area was initially called “Pentucket” which means “land of the winding river.” Originally having its roots in agriculture, by the 18th century new industries had developed, such as shipping, shipyards and tanning. In subsequent years Haverhill has become an important industrial center.

1. Visit the Northern Essex Community College: With campuses in Haverhill and Lawrence, the school is a popular choice for students aiming to attain an Associate’s degree at low cost. Many Northern Essex students follow a Bachelor’s degree at regional four-year institutions.

2. Relive your childhood at the Haverhill High School: This is a public high school with about 2,000 students in grades 9 to 12. 4. The John Greenleaf Whittier Homestead:  This is the birthplace and home of American Quaker poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier. The museum is located at 305 Whittier Road and was built in 1688 by Thomas Whittier, who was a pioneer and great-great-grandfather of John.

5. Zion Bible College: The undergraduate Bible College was originally situated in Barrington, Rhode Island, but was relocated to Haverhill, Massachusetts. The sole purpose of the college is to educate and prepare Pentecostal leaders for working in the ministries of pastoral, prophetic, evangelistic and teaching. The only degree given by the school is Bachelor of Bible.
