The borough of Fair Lawn covers 5.2 square miles in Bergen County, New Jersey.  Fair Lawn is situated in the northeast corner of New Jersey just 22 miles from New York City.  The town of Fairlawn was originally an agriculture center but has grown to much more and offers many historic sites to explore.

1.  The Fairlawn/Patterson Fish Weir: This “V” shaped fishing trap constructed of cobblestone along the Passaic River, dates back to Lenni-Lenapi Native American times. It is still visible and is one of only a few pre European settlement artifacts that remain undisturbed in the northeastern United States.

2. Garretson Forge and Farm: This pre-Revolutionary site is the oldest in the county
and is listed on the New Jersey State and United States National Historic Registers. The sandstone house was built in 1719. The gardens on the ground are butterfly friendly and attract Monarchs and other butterflies to its food and host plants. Events are planed at the site throughout the year.

2. Radburn: Radburn is America’s first planned community and was founded in 1929
as “a town for the motor age.” The 149-acre community features 23 acres of parks, tennis courts, ball fields, swimming pools, and archery plazas.  The housing in Radburn ranges from apartments to single family units.  The community is on the National Register of Historic Places and is great place for walking and relaxing outside.

3. Old Red Mill: This two and a half story landmark was built in 1745 and is located
along the Saddle River. During the Revolutionary War the mill was used to produce wool blankets and yarn made from flax grown in the area. Aaron Burr and President William McKinley visited the mill.

5. Saddle River: One of the most picturesque sites in town are the paths that run along Saddle River.  Bike, walk, or roller blade along the river, under old bridges, and by duck ponds and enjoy the nature that surrounds you.
