Located on the Gulf of Mexico this Texas town is a great place to visit. The city is unique as some of it is located on an island connected to the mainland by a causeway and ferry service. Here are a few things not to miss in Galveston.

1. Visit Moody Gardens- Much more than gardens, this complex includes an aquarium with 8,000 species of fish, mammals, reptiles and plants; and a rainforest building complete with bat caves, waterfalls and trees as well as a variety of free-roaming animals and butterflies.

2. Visit the Island- Cool off at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island. Schlitterbahn is said to be one of the best water parks in the world. One of the great features of this park is it’s unique “transportainment” system that allows visitors to traverse the park without ever having to leave the water. For cold weather visitors, there is an indoor portion of the park that is open year round.

3. Tour the Lone Star Flight Museum- This museum began as a private airplane collection and grew to a tourist attraction complete with 40 historically significant airplanes as well as its own airstrip. The museum also houses artifacts related to the history of flight.

4. Go shopping in the Strand National Historic Landmark District- This historic area is home to many Victorian style buildings. These buildings now house antique and novelty shops as well as restaurants.

5. Visit the Balinese Room- This well-known nightclub is built on a 600-foot pier that stretches out over the Gulf of Mexico.
