5 Things You Must  Do In Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge Car Rental

Baton Rouge, Louisiana is known as Red Stick to locals and is famous for its great food – Cajun, Creole, French and Mexican and of course for the river that runs through. The official web site lists 101 things to do and I’ve picked out 5 of the best.

1. Swamp tours with Alligator Bayou aboard the canopied, all weather Alligator Queen. See the snapping turtles and cypress trees hundred of years old – and of course alligators.

2. Visit the Rural Life Museum and Windrush Gardens More than 20 buildings full of all the things that made up life in Louisiana before the industrial revolution. Everything from tools and  vehicles to furnishings and textiles. See life as it was.

3. Old State Capitol Building- See the building that Mark Twain described as ‘The ugliest thing on the Mississippi’ – the Old State Capitol building completed in 1849. The new Capitol was opened in 1932. The older building is now a museum featuring many interactive exhibits and shows the history of the state.

4. The USS Kid-Camp out overnight on the World War II destroyer USS Kid at the Baton Rouge Nautical Center.

5. Eat a Louisiana mango. They say there are as many ways to eat a mango as there are mango eaters. Do you suck, slice, chop or just chew? Of try them in ice cream or in a savoury dish. Whichever way don’t miss out and take plenty of napkins.  Buy them from the farmers market at Denham springs, Livingston.
