
5 Things you must do in Anchorage
If you're in Anchorage in the lead up to Spring, be sure to check out the largest Winter festival in the Northern United States, called The Fur Rendezvous Festival. The Anchorage Center for the Performing Arts is where they hold the International Ice Carving Competition each year, and the Sled Dog Race which brings mushers from across the country together to compete. 1. Walk- There are 121 miles of hiking trails in Anchorage, including the Tony Knowles coastal trail. The American Backpackers Club helped name Anchorage the best trail city in the U.S. 2. Visit Sullivan Arena- Head downtown for concerts, ice hockey, football, trade shows and just about anything that needs that kind of space. For more information on the Arena click on the link. 3. Seaward Highway- You will find the indoor water park H2Oasis with wave pool, tube slides, body slides and speed slides. Or, you could just swim, kayak, and go on a river walk. There are dance performances on the Centre stage and a trail around the lake takes you to various points where native guides give demonstrations of the several Alaskan cultures. For more information on the Center click on the link. 5. Visit the Glacier Brew House on West 5th Avenue for garlic mash and apple wood, grilled king salmon.
6. Prince William Sound (right) is a tourist favorite, although there are several excellent tours of similar scenic proportions. The Chugach National Forest will also take your breath away. The 26 Glacier Tour is a very popular tour to cruise around Prince William Sound, and the stunning Exit Glacier is located 14 miles north- west of Seward. The Alaska Zoo at 4731 O'Malley Road in Anchorage has a fantastic selection of Alaskan wildlife, like the Lynx, Musk Ox and lots of Bears. Alaska is as far as it is wide, get around Anchorage with a cheap rental car. Cold, noisy bus trips are never as fun as they seem, so by booking a car rental, you can keep your toes warm in your own private Anchorage car.
