5 Things to do in San Carlos
San Bernardino, California, located 60 miles east of Los Angeles, is a city that features activities for every season of the year. Hiking and camping locations are as easy to find as interesting museums and great shopping.
1. The San Carlos Museum of History. The San Carlos Museum of History invites visitors to “revisit the past”. It includes artifacts from the city’s earliest settlers, a restored locomotive, pottery collections and even examples of early office and electronic equipment that was developed in the area. It's at 533 Laurel Street.
2. Eaton Big Canyon Trail. This is one of many hiking and walking trails in the San Carlos area (left). This is a highlight because of the well-marked trail, which has information at every 1/10th mile interval. Facts about the wildlife, plants and area are posted along each marker.
3. Hiller Aviation Museum. Hiller Aviation Museum is a museum that explores man’s fascination with flight. The museum gives families the chance to learn about the history of flight while looking toward the future. Each summer, it hosts a variety of camps and activities for kids in grades 1 through 6. It's at 601 Skyway Road.
4. Burton Park. Every summer, San Carlos’ Burton Park hosts its Summer Concert series. Every Friday in July and August, enjoy a picnic supper and listen to music such as jazz, swing, and country-rock.
5. Hot Harvest Night. Hot Harvest Night happens every Thursday starting in early May and runs all summer. Over 50 vendors set up shop on Laurel Street, which is closed to traffic and where shops and restaurants stay open late.
Renting a car is the cheapest way to get around San Carlos. Not only can you check out the downtown area, but you can make a few road trips at your leisure.
