Two female friends enjoying their road trip

Chicago Midway International Airport is the second largest passenger airport in Illinois with Chicago O'Hare International Airport being the largest. It is situated on the southwest side of Chicago and just 8 miles away from the Loop.

Low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways dominate the Midway Airport. Do you want to find out more about Chicago Midway International Airport?

Chicago Midway International Airport was formerly known as Chicago Air Park back in 1923. It was established on a 320-acre plot with one runway used for airmail flights. The city of Chicago leased the air park and renamed it to Chicago Municipal Airport in 1927. The airport had four runways and 12 hangars after a year of operation under new management. A new passenger terminal was established at 62nd Street in 1931.

A year after the new terminal was opened, Chicago Municipal Airport was named the “World's Busiest Airport". It received more than 100,846 passengers and handled over 60,947 flights. The name of the airport was changed to Chicago Midway Airport in 1949. It was named after the historical Battle of Midway, which was one of the most important naval battles during World War II. The airport received around 3.2 million passengers on the same year. In 1959, the number of passengers increased to 10 million.

Reconstruction of the Chicago Midway International Airport began in 1967. They added three new concourses with three ticket counters and 28 gates. A year after that, the city of Chicago invested $10 million for the airport's renovation. The Midway Airport Terminal Development Program was announced by Mayor Richard M. Daley in 1996. It was Illinois' largest public works project during that time.

Concourse A opened a new food court and walkway in 2009 as part of the project. After a year, the airport expansions were finished. Currently, Chicago Midway International Airport is the second largest passenger airport in Illinois.
