Newark Liberty International Airport was the first major airport in the New Jersey-New York metropolitan area. It was opened on October 1, 1928 and it quickly became one of the busiest commercial airports in the world. Albert Einstein was even spotted at the Newark Airport in April 1939. According to Lou Shornick, he was on the roof of the Terminal Building when he saw the German-born physicist getting off a TWA DC-3 and being met by some people on the Tarmac. This occurred approximately four months before Einstein wrote the letter to FDR about building an Atomic Bomb. 
The Army Air Corps took over the airport during World War II, followed by the Port Authority in 1948. The airport undergone major improvements under the management of the agency such as adding a terminal building, instrument runway, air cargo center, and a control tower. 

Port Authority Administration Building, Central Heating and Refrigeration Plant, Central Terminal Area, as well as roadways and taxiways were established during the early 1970s. Terminals A and B were finished in 1973 and they have four levels. A two-building maintenance complex was also opened in 1989. The addition of the International Arrivals Facility in Terminal B and the AirTrain Newark occurred in 1996. A 325-foot control tower was established in 2003 and more improvements are currently being done at the airport.
Newark Liberty International Airport received 34,041,027 passengers in 2012, but their all-time record of the most number of passengers were in 2007 with 36,367,240.
