The county seat of Smith County, Tyler has an area of 54.376 square miles and a population of more than 96,900 residents, according to the 2010 census. Tyler was named this way in honor of President John Tyler. Nowadays, the city is the most important one in the whole area, being well known under the name of the "Rose Capital of the Nation," due to the many roses and actually the America's largest rose garden, located here. The Texas Rose Festival is one of the most important events to be held in the city. In fact this festival manages to draw an impressive number of visitors, every year. The Rose Festival is held each October and features a beautiful parade and many other city events.

The Caldwell Zoo is an 85 acres zoo located in Tyler. Numerous animal species can be visited in this location, actually including species from all around the world. The zoo first opened in the city in 1953, featuring more than 500 animals, representing 87 different species.

The Tyler State Park is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Tyler. The recreational options offered here are limitless. Amenities include picnic areas, camping areas, boating facilities, but also fishing ponds, walking, biking and hiking trails and also a swimming lake and birdwatching facilities. The park was first established in 1939.
