Ready, set, go; Indianapolis

Let’s get right to the point, shall we? The Indianapolis 500. This event is the largest single- day sporting event in the world, based on audience turn out, which is annually a whopping 400, 000 people. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is arguably the most famous speedway of all time, hosts the famous 500 mile race that was established in 1909.

You must get to this speedway. Even if you don’t have the luck of getting a ticket to a race, you can pay a few dollars to see the historic museum on site. Here Nascar, Indy and Formula 1 cars are displayed so you can get that once in a lifetime, up close look at your favourite model, not to mention the restored, old models you can’t find anymore. Driver biographies and track history are a good read for true race fans, and for a small fee you can get a bus tour around the speedway.

The month of the Indy 500, Indianapolis as a city comes alive and celebrates what makes it so unique. The Indy Jazz Festival, a three day event that links up to the Indy 500 so visitors get the best of the city in a short space of time, perfect for a short holiday.

The truth about this city is that it’s energetic and adventurous, a one stop shop for sports nuts and those with a streak of spontaneity. In Indianapolis you’ll find basketball, baseball, football, hockey, tennis, car racing (of course) and then there are all the recreational sports you can do in between sight seeing, such as jogging, cycling, hiking, rollerblading and horse riding. So yes, it’s a sporty city, not to mention safe, clean, affordable and accessible. Indianapolis is the only city to link itself on to so many major cities like Columbus, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Louisville and Chicago.

Things to do

For the best jogging, walking, cycling, canoeing and sailing, Canal Walk or the Central Canal Towpath held within White River State Park is a great afternoon spent. White River State Park also holds the National Institute of Fitness and Sport, the Indianapolis Zoo, and an IMAX theater. You can also walk, cycle or hike at the Fort Harrison state park, catching a little bit of history while you’re there- there’s a restored World War II prisoner-of-war camp on site.

Indianapolis is also a great golf city, with some premier courses that’ll knock your socks off. Try the Coffin Golf Club, the Eagle Creek Golf Club, the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course, or the Fort Golf Resort, a 7,144 yard public course that’s housed within the Fort Harrison State Park. If you can’t find golfing pleasure at one of these, you aren’t a real golfer…

Places to go

Indianapolis is divided into districts which make it easy for you to decide where to go, based on your interests. Broad Ripple Village is a very popular area with the young folk, with lots of college students based there and a boho, laid back atmosphere surrounding it. There’s plenty to do recreationally and lots of shops and restaurants to keep you amused. Broad Ripple is the home of the Broad Ripple Art Fair, held in May by the Indianapolis Art Center.

Wholesale District is a one stop shop for the best bargains in town, leading the way with the Circle Center Mall. It’s a little bit of a tourist trap due to the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, but you can otherwise have a bite to eat and see a game at the Conseco Fieldhouse or RCA Dome.

Canal and White River State Park head up another district of parks and entertainment venues. There’s lot of waterfront and places for a nice stroll.

Arts and culture come to a heap at downtown Fountain Square, this district is full to the brim of arts venues like the Fountain Square Theater which hosts Friday night swing dances. This area is a must for the arty types that like a rich, urban edge to their evenings.

Lockerbie Square is the oldest district, revamped into a night hot spot with an artistic approach. There are lots of theaters and galleries, shops, bars and nightclubs for those who like to take their creativity long into the next morning.
