Things that go bump in the night

In the weekly news is the latest LA hot spot, where celebrities and star gazers flock to see, and be seen. There’s no point talking about those places, because next week, the same celebs and star gazers wouldn’t be caught dead there.

Let’s try another tactic. How about the places where you can just have really great fun? How about the places you have a quiet beer and not be bothered with annoying tourists? How about the places where you can meet in urban coolness and sip a cold cosmo? Good idea.

Area at 8000 Beverly Boulevard is technically a celeb haunt, but for good reason, it’s a great place to hang out. When the celebs move on to the next hot spot, Area will still be a really cool place to spend a night, so it makes the cut. It’s very retro chic and kinda 60’s/ 70’s in style, making your Friday night out a funky, themed affair. Dress up, and check to see if you need a reservation, it's not that easy to get in.

Bordello, also a theme bar on 901 East 1st Street, is a great way to spend a Saturday night. Once a legal bordello, it’s now a lush club with a sexy nod to it’s raunchy past. The lounges are red, the lighting is dim and the artwork is ornate. It’s a bit lavish, but sometimes, it’s good to get out there.

Speaking of out there, Here is the perfect place to be if you are into fun, energetic nights with a funky edge. Here is one of LA’s best gay clubs, full of fun vibes, but isn’t snobby and makes a totally comfortable night for all crowds. Here is at 696 North Robertson Blvd, West Hollywood.

The average American bar can be found at The Well, 6255 Sunset Boulevard. The bartenders will mix you a great drink, while listening to good rock music and teens won’t be lining up to get a view of anyone who hangs there. You’ll just have a quiet drink, without the bother of the annoying people that frequent most bars.

For those aching for a bar without a guest list, look no further. This cool bar is easy going, yet stylish and you’ll get let in without forfeiting a limb. Monroe’s at 8623 Melrose Avenue is a sleek version of a local bar that will keep you comfortable and in a good place, atmospherically speaking. The music is hip- hop/ R & B.

Artists will love tapas at the Mandrake, those into happy hours and kitsch Mexican scenes will like Malo (the margs are good, right), and those who just want a really good beer will love Library Alehouse.
