* Important information about car rental insurance

For US citizens
Some US credit cards and personal car insurance policies do provide car rental insurance so please check with your credit card provider and personal auto insurance policy for details.

Visiting the US from another country
It is illegal to drive in the US without car insurance. Your travel insurance probably only covers the excess so check the fine print in your travel insurance policy.

For more information please see our U.S.A. car rental insurance guide.

All extras and additional services will attract additional local percentage taxes and surcharges. Prices below are exclusive of these as they vary state to state.

OR see Avis for further details

Driver's License

A valid driver's license is required for all operators of any Avis vehicle. The license must be valid at the time of rental, and remain valid throughout the rental period. All drivers must meet Avis' requirements. Driver's licenses accepted in the US are:

  • Any license issued by any US state, territory or possession.
  • A license issued by a Canadian province.
  • A license issued by a country that participated in the 1949 Geneva convention on Road Traffic or the 1943 Convention on the Regulation of Inter-American Automobile Traffic.
  • A license issued by a country that has a reciprocal agreement with the US.

International Driver's Permits are only valid if presented with the original local license. An International Driver's Permit it not acceptable by itself. In addition, at the time of rental, the renter, authorized driver or additional driver may be subject to an electronic DMV check or may be required to sign a declaration attesting to the fact that they have a valid license that is not currently suspended, revoked, expired, cancelled or surrendered. A temporary driver's license is acceptable provided it does not have any restrictions and is valid for the entire period of the rental. Individuals with learner's permits may not operate Avis vehicles.

Age Requirements

Avis rents to customers between the ages of 21-24 with an Avis-honored credit card and valid driver's license.  If you have any questions about underage driving restrictions, please contact Avis prior to your arrival at the rental counter.

Exceptions:

In New York State, the minimum age to rent is 18 with a per-day surcharge for customers between the ages of 18-20 and  underage surcharge for customers between the ages of 21-24.

Michigan, will continue its minimum rental age of 18 with a per-day surcharge for customers between the ages of 18-20 and  underage surcharge for customers between the ages of 21-24.

Government Personnel (civilian or military) minimum age policy is as follows:

For Personnel (FEMA, U.S. Postal Dept., Navy and Army) not using the Government Leisure Pass, minimum age is
  • 18 years (No underage surcharge will apply) with Government Travel or Purchase order
  • 21 years (No underage surcharge will apply) without Travel or Purchase order
When using the Government Leisure Pass the renter is subject to underage fees as specified by the renting location.

Renters between the ages of 21-24 may not rent vehicles in the following car classes:
  • Full-Size SUVs
  • Luxury
  • Minivans
  • Passenger Vans
  • Premium SUVs

Additional Drivers

The following individuals, if 25 years of age or older and in possession of a valid driver's license, may drive the car with the renter's prior permission:

  • Renter's employer (while on company business);
  • Renter's fellow employee (while on company business);
  • Renter's spouse or life partner.

The above additional drivers are considered authorized drivers and need not be present at the time of rental nor do they need to sign an additional driver form.

Other individuals may be listed as additional drivers, provided they are at least 25 years of age; present a valid driver's license; present an Avis-honored charge card; and complete an additional driver form. An additional driver fee may apply for each additional driver (see Additional Driver Fees for details and exceptions).

Fuel

Avis rates do not include fuel. Avis offers three fueling options in the U.S.:

  • Return the car with the same amount of fuel as when rented, and no refueling fee will apply.
  • Return the car with less fuel than when rented and pay a refueling service charge for the fuel used. The refueling service charge is a rate generally higher than the local retail gasoline prices.
  • Purchase the fuel service option available at most U.S. rental locations and participating licensees where permitted. The refueling service option allows the renter the option of purchasing, at the time of rental, a full tank of fuel at a price competitive with the prevailing local self-service gas station rates for regular unleaded gasoline. This eliminates the need to refill the tank before the car is returned. There is no credit given for fuel remaining in the vehicle at the time the vehicle is returned, so the renter should return the car with no more fuel than required. The desired fuel option must be selected at the time the vehicle is rented.

Payment Policy - Credit Card

Avis accepts most major credit cards as credit identification at the time of rental.

Accepted credit card list: Avis Charge Card, American Express, AT&T Capital, Diner's Club Int'l, Discover, GE Capital, JCB, MasterCard, PHH, Sears and Visa.
Some locations may not accept each of the referenced cards.

Payment Policy - Debit Card

There are Avis locations that will accept bank debit cards with the MasterCard or Visa logo at the time of rental if you are at least 25 years of age. You will be subject to a credit check to determine and ensure credit worthiness before releasing the car to you.

Avis will generally request an authorization hold against your account for the estimated charges of the rental but reserves the right in its sole discretion, to request an extra value to be based on certain factors as we deem appropriate. THESE FUNDS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR USE. When the rental is over we will process the reversal but the bank may take time to post it back to the account.

Positive identification in addition to your driver's license may be required.

Driving Restrictions

Avis driving restrictions will depend on the location.

USA
Avis may permit their vehicles to be driven throughout the continental US without restrictions. Based on availability; One-way rentals may be allowed to some US cities.

Canada Allowed if the following conditions are met:
Renters may drive US vehicles into Canada, with no restrictions on Provinces.
Rental counter must be notified at the time of rental that you plan to drive the vehicle into Canada so we may issue a Canadian Non-Resident Insurance Card (this card is provided at no cost and will be required to cross the border).

Mexico
Some locations allow their vehicles to be driven to Mexico. One-way rental is not allowed. You may find this information in the Avis T&C link on the Book Page when placing a booking.
