Springfield is the county seat of Hampden County, Massachusetts. The city was the home of Theodore Seuss Giesel, popularly known as Dr. Seuss, of the “Cat in the Hat” stories. Springfield is also well known as the birthplace of basketball. The city has several institutions of higher education and is an educational hub of New England.

1. See the Basketball Hall of Fame: This is a memorial to the famous stars of basket ball, including “Magic Johnson” It was unveiled in September 2002 and is a must –see for basketball fans visiting the area. Opening hours are Monday - Friday10am – 4pm and Saturday and Sunday10am – 5pm.

2. Visit the Quadrangle: This houses the city library and has four interesting museums. The Springfield Science Museum, The Connecticut Valley Historical Museum and two art museums - The Museum of Fine Arts and The George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum. The museums are closed on Mondays and at New Year, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Opening times vary depending on the museum.

3. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Springfield Armory: The Springfield Armory was chosen by George Washington as America's first arms depot during the American Revolution. Today, the Armory is a part of the Springfield Technical College and attracts a number of tourists.

4. Visit the Six Flags New England: This large popular theme park is located near Agawam with just about any kind of ride from the classic and gentile carousel to the terrifying Ride of Steel or the Catapult. Open everyday from early May to the beginning of September.

5. Enjoy the Eastern States Exposition: This is popularly called the “Big E” and is one of the most amusing and entertaining fairs in the county which is held every September for 17 days. It includes numerous shows to entertain visitors all ages and a number of parades.
