In 1785 Gardner was officially incorporated as a town, receiving its name in honor of colonel Thomas Gardner. Dunn State Park is located in Gardner on a land donated by John Ainsworth Dunn in 1915. He had a furniture company in Gardner, but during the Great Depression, his business closed.
