Useful information on Honolulu International Airport

The Honolulu Airport serves as a gateway to Hawaii and the city of Honolulu.  It is situated 3 miles away from the central business district of Oahu and has easy access to Interstate H-1's Queen Liliuokalani Freeway and Nimitz Highway. The largest airline in Hawaii operates at the Honolulu International Airport. Hawaiian Airlines offers flights between Hawaiian Islands airports and serves key destinations in the United States, American Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, Tahiti, South Korea, and Japan. The airport also handles flights of major U.S. airlines and international airlines.

The Honolulu International Airport currently has three terminals: Commuter Terminal (Gates 62-80), Interisland Terminal(Gates 49-61), and Main Overseas Terminal(Gates 6-34). The “Wiki Wiki” buses, which means “quick” in Hawaiian, provide transportation between all three terminals.

Honolulu International Airport was originally called John Rodgers Airport when it was established in March 1927. The airport was named after John Rodgers, who was a pioneering aviator and naval officer. During World War II, the airport was used by the U.S. military as a Naval Air Station. They built a terminal building and control tower at the airport grounds. The military returned the airport to Hawaii in 1946 making it one of the largest airports in the country with three seaplane runways and four paved-land runways.

The John Rodgers Terminal replaced the original terminal building in 1962. Renowned architect Vladimir Ossipoff created new designs for the modernization of the terminal, which included the additional of the Diamond Head Concourse (1970), Ewa Concourse (1972), and Central Concourse (1980). Honolulu International Airport handled flights from Pan Amsince 1946. Other huge airlines such as Continental Airlines, American Airlines and other foreign carriers used HNL as their hub or stopover.

The Governor of Hawaii, Linda Lingle, announced the modernization program for HNLthat's worth $2.3 billion back in 2006. The airport had undergone upgrades and expansions since its modernization began such as upgrade of flight display monitors, new parking garage, international arrivals corridor, new food and drinks vendors, and six circular check-in islands.

Also included in the modernization project is the expansion of the Mauka Concourse. They want to branch that off the Interisland Terminal and replace the existing Commuter Terminal. Because of its world-class facilities, HNL was featured in Hollywood films such as Godzilla (2014) and Snakes on a Plane (2006) as well as several episodes of Hawaii Five-O. To help you find your way in Honolulu Airport, check out their terminal map.
