The name of the city comes from the Hobe Indian tribe which named it Hobe Sound. A map maker wrote it wrong - Jove and the other map makers considered it comes from Jupiter and anglicized it. The Roman god Jupiter had a wife named Juno, so one of the neighborhoods of the city is called Juno Beach. Notable residents of Jupiter include singer Tori Amos, singer Celine Dion, former NBA player Michael Jordan and actor Burt Reynolds.

Jupiter Inlet Light was planned in 1853 to be built after a design of lieutenant George C. Meade. The construction only finished in 1860 and the final costs of the lighthouse were more than 60.000 dollars. It is build on an Indian shell mound. The light of this touristic attraction of Jupiter can bee seen 25 miles at sea. The lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Florida Atlantic University is also called FAU and is a public university with its campuses located in Jupiter and nearby cities. The university opened in 1964 and in the first year had 867 students. In the recent years, the number of students approached 30.000.

Burt Reynolds and Friends Museum is dedicated to the great actor and director and one of America's most famous residents. Burt Reynolds was the first actor ever who received a check of one million dollars for a movie and he was famous for his skills that made him achieve success both in drama and comedy. The museum depicts his life and is the home of personal collections of the actor who lived a part of his life in Jupiter.
