New Iberia is also called on its Spanish name - Nueva Iberia or on its French name - La Nouvelle-Iberie. New Iberia is a city located in Iberia Parish, being also its parish seat. The city was settled by Malaguenian colonists in 1779 and named in honor of the Iberian Peninsula. Top Attractions within New Iberia

Avery Island or Ile Petite Anse is the source of Tabasco sauce for the surroundings of New Iberia. It is located within the area of the city, close to Vermillion Bay and is named after a family who inhabited the island in the 1830s and found the precious salt dome. In present, on the island you can also visit a bird sanctuary - a real paradise maintained by the Avery family and an area filled with exotic plants including numerous species of azaleas, camellias and beautiful oak trees.

Shadows-on-the-Teche is a historic landmark of New Iberia. The house was built between 1831 and 1834 for sugarcane plantation owner David Weeks and his family. In present, the property is managed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is opened to visitors, which can admire a great archive of family items inside the home.

Buddha Temple is located in Jungle Gardens, on the Avery Island. The temple was built a few years ago in honor of the Buddhists living in New Iberia that help make the town a peaceful place.
