Philadelphia International Airport was known before as Philadelphia Municipal Airport and it was opened to the public in 1940. The airport serviced 400,000 passengers and just a few carriers during the early years of its operation. Before it became an international airport, it used to be a training airfield for the Pennsylvania National Guard in 1925. 

Philadelphia Municipal Airport was renamed to Philadelphia International Airport in 1945 and that year, American Overseas Airlines started to offer direct flights to Europe. During the early years of operation, the airport has undergone several developments and changes. The airport had runways 4, 9, 12, and 17 between 1947 and 1950. Expansions were made on runway 9 in 1956. Runway 12 closed in 1959 as well as runway 4 in the early 1970s.

opened new terminal in December 1953; and the oldest parts of the terminals B and C were built in the late 1950s. As of today, the airport seven terminal buildings that are divided into seven lettered concourses. 

The dominant carrier of PHL was the US Airways during the 1980s and 1990s. The airline started to shift most of its operations from Pittsburgh to the Philadelphia International Airport in 2003. A year after the US Airways dominated the airport, Southwest Airlines joined the list of carriers. The airline announced that they will be offering flights from the Philadelphia Airport to the Midwest, East Coast, and other key cities thus making it the biggest competitor of US Airways. 

As of today, Philadelphia International Airport serves around 30.8 million passengers annually; making it one of the world's busiest airports. It is also one of the fastest growing airports in the country. There has been an increase in passenger traffic from 2003 to 2004. The numbers continue to increase as air travel becomes more popular.
