This makes Portage the largest city in Porter County. Before the European settlers came to Portage, a group of Native American Indians named Mound Builders lived in the area. In the mid 19th century, a lot of Europeans were already living in what is known today as Portage. Today, Portage is an important industrial city, in a continuous development.
