More information on Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was built by the Port of Seattle in 1944, when the United States had commandeered the existing local airport (Boeing Field). The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) and the City of Tacoma spent $1.1 million dollars to build it. The first commercial flights from SeaTac took off in 1947.
Locals sued the Port in the 1970's, claiming airplane noise, vibrations and air pollution were harming them. This led to a new community plan and the Port spending over $100 million to buy up real estate and soundproof homes and school buildings.
In 1992, local planners decided that a 3rd runway at the airport was necessary, and although lawsuits were filed again, after many years they were dropped in 2004 and the newest runway finally opened in 2008. It cost over a billion dollars!
In 2005, Southwest Airlines complained of the expense of flying to and from SeaTac and threatened to leave the airport. Although Southwest said it was willing to pay to upgrade Boeing Field, no changes have actually been made since then. For more information, visit the official website of Sea-Tac Airport.
