Smithfield is a beautiful town located in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, United States of America. Smithfield is considered to be "The Ham Capital of the World", because the town is famous for the ham it produces through Smithfield Foods, the world’s largest pork processor. Smithfield was first inhabited in 1634, because of its location along the Pagan River. The Native Americans that first lived in the area named it Warrosquoyake, which means "point of land". Smithfield was settled by Arthur Smith IV in 1752 and it was used as a seaport. In our time, Smithfield tries to keep its old south charm, bases its economy on Smithfield Foods and is the home of approximately 8000 residents.
