The history of Sylva begins with general E. R. Hampton who owned a large part of the land in the area. When the town received a post office he asked his daughter to name it. She liked very much a handyman who worked in their home, a Danish named William D. Sylva, so, she chose to name the city Sylva. The town was incorporated in 1889.
