The small city of Sylva is the county seat of Jackson County and has a population of approximately 2500 residents on an area of a little more than 3 square miles. The history of Sylva begins with general E. R. Hampton who owned a large part of the land in the area. When the town received a post office he asked his daughter to name it. She liked very much a handyman who worked in their home, a Danish named William D. Sylva, so, she chose to name the city Sylva. The town was incorporated in 1889.

Jackson County War Museum is a memorial raised in Sylva in honor of all the men and women residing in the city, who served the Army of the United States in times of war. Because they gave their lives for the country, in the city center of Sylva was erected this memorial in 1986.

O'Malley's is a typical Irish pub located right in the middle of Sylva. The little establishment has a great atmosphere, offers delicious food and a large assortment of beers. The staff is friendly and helpful and locals love this place.
