Adding an Additional Driver in the U.S.

additional driver

When it comes to road trips and traveling long distances, having someone share the drive with you is a great option. By doing this, each driver is able to share the amount of driving required to get to your chosen destination. VroomVroomVroom has put together this guide so you can understand how to add an additional driver to your car rental booking.

How to add additional drivers?

Additional drivers can be added before or after the pick-up date by visiting the depot and presenting their driver's license with the primary renter. They need to be added to the rental agreement before they can drive the vehicle. The potential drivers will need to meet the same requirements as the main driver such as a valid driver's licence and age surcharge for drivers under the age of 25.

Is there a fee for additional drivers?

Yes, there is a fee for additional drivers in most states and the rates may vary per car rental company and location.

*Note: All extra add-ons will attract additional percentage taxes and surcharges. Prices are subject to change without notice.

Can I add a spouse as a driver and how much is it?

Most car rental companies will have your spouse classified as an authorized driver which means they will not need to pay an extra fee. The same thing works if you are on a business trip and with your employer or employee. Most car rental companies will not charge you a fee when adding an authorized driver however, ensure that you check the car rental companies terms and conditions to ensure this is the case. Authorized drivers will not need to sign an "Additional Driver" form.

Important

Check the car rental requirements...

The same car rental requirements will also apply to additional drivers, such as minimum age, licence type etc. If they do not meet the correct requirements, they will not be able to be added to the car rental agreement as an additional driver and will not be able to drive the rental car.
