Can I Add an Additional Driver to My Car Rental Booking

additional drivers US banner

Yes. A lot of car rental companies will allow you to add an additional driver to your booking. But keep in mind that policies concerning additional drivers are different depending on the supplier you are renting your car from. Generally, a surcharge will apply for each additional driver. You will not need to register an additional driver until you arrive at the car rental depot to collect your hire car. Additional drivers will need to have their drivers licence, abide the same terms and conditions as the main driver, and be present to sign the rental agreement.

Additional drivers can also be added before or after the pick-up date by visiting the depot and presenting their driver's license. They will need to be added to the rental agreement before they can drive the vehicle.

There are exceptions to these rules for some suppliers. For example, in some cases certain people may be classified as authorized drivers and will not need to pay an extra fee.

  • An employer or employee (if traveling on company business)
  • Spouse

Minimum age requirements will also apply to additional drivers.

The fees for additional drivers will be different for each car rental company, and different rules and regulations may apply. For example, Hertz charges an Additional Authorized Operators Fee of $13.50 per day, capped at $189 per rental for each additional driver.
