Will the Car Rental Company Place a Hold On My Credit Card?

Credit card hold in picking up rental car US banner

Generally car rental companies will require renters to provide a credit card so that a hold can be placed to cover any additional charges incurred during the rental period. Policies differ based on which car rental company you are hiring from, and if you are paying with a debit card you may be required to leave a different amount.

  • Many suppliers require a credit card hold of $200. In some cases, they may request a hold of the full estimated charges of the rental if this is greater than $200.
  • The hold may be calculated as a percentage of the rental charges. For example, some Thrifty locations in the United States place a hold on the renter's card for the estimated amount of the rental as well as an additional 15%.
  • The hold will be removed at the end of the rental provided there are no additional charges.
  • Don't forget to check the terms and conditions of your rental booking as they may be different from other locations.

 Important:
When the car rental company places a hold on your credit card, it is important to note that these funds will not be available to you during the rental period. When you return the car and the final charges are settled than the amount will be released.
