Can I Rent a Car with a Restricted License?

Restricted License in the USA

This will depend on the car rental company. Keep in mind that each rental company is different and has different policies. In this case, we at VroomVroomVroom can only help you by providing the contact details of each supplier, hence our website is only designed for full license held for at least 12 months. You may need to coordinate and contact the supplier in advance to determine if they will allow you to rent a car based on your situation.

What is a restricted license?

A restricted license is a driver's license that has restrictions on it. Compared to a normal valid driver's license which permits drivers to use and rent a vehicle at any time, a restricted license provides limited driving privileges accompanied with certain guidelines. Usually, people with restricted licenses will have limitations on where and when they can drive.

In the US, individuals could be granted a restricted driver's license with the following circumstances:

  • travel to and from work
  • travel to doctor's appointments (emergency situations)
  • travel to court appearances and/or counseling appointments
  • transport a dependent to school or another caregiver

Note that these licenses are often reviewed and only given on a case-by-case basis.
