Hertz Terms & Conditions - Canada

The below T&Cs (including prices and taxes) are provided by Hertz and may change without notice to VroomVroomVroom.ca.

This quote includes:

  • all taxes, airport taxes and surcharges if applicable
  • Stated mileage amount (generally unlimited, see below for extra mileage charges)
  • Vehicle Registration fee,
  • One way fees if applicable,
  • All vehicle fees related to the booking e.g. Vehicle drop fees, all recovery fees, premium location fees, corporate location fees wherever applicable.

This quote will not include:

  • Fuel
  • Insurance (See next paragraph*)
  • Child seats or booster seats (can be purchased after confirmation for generally $11.99 per day plus local tax and surcharges). Some locations don't offer booster seats. Prince George only have child seats for around $5.
  • Extra miles (if your rental has limited mileage, each additional mile over the limit will be charged from $0.15 to $0.30) which can vary from each location.
  • Age surcharge of around $25 per day for drivers 20-24 years old (18 to 24 in Quebec). Around $30 for larger vehicles (i.e. Yukon XL, Standard SUVs)- varies across locations.
  • GPS can be requested after confirmation and is not guaranteed. Costs are around $12.99 to $15.99 per day plus local tax and surcharges- varies from each location.
  • Any extras signed up for upon arrival, e.g. vehicle snow equipment.
  • All extras and additional services will attract additional local percentage taxes and surcharges. Prices below are exclusive of these as they vary state to state.

Some US credit cards and personal car insurance policies do provide car rental insurance so please check with your credit card provider and personal auto insurance policy for details.

Visiting the US from another country
It is illegal to drive in the US without car insurance. Your travel insurance probably only covers the excess so check the fine print in your travel insurance policy.

Driver's License

Valid license from country of residence will be required at time of rental.

Also acceptable are temporary license or permit issued when license is lost, stolen or expired.

License issued in foreign countries in a language other than English may also require that you provide an International Driver's License to establish validity.

The Fullsize Van requires a Commercial Driver's License to transport non-profit groups or for commercial use.  Vehicle may not be used to transport passengers for hire.  The Commercial Driver's License requirement does not apply to personal rentals.

Please note: G2 driver's license holders must be 25 years old in order to rent any vehicle. The Age Differential Charge does not apply.

Age Differential Charge

Renters aged 20 to 24 years (18 to 24 in Quebec) will be allowed to rent vehicle groups Economy 2-4 Door, Compact 2-4 Door, Intermediate 2-4 Door, Standard 2-4 Door, Fullsize 2-4 Door. An Age Differential charge will be applied to the rental.

On most retail rentals at corporate locations and participating licensee locations in Canada, the minimum age is 25 without an additional Age Differential Charge, and 20 with an additional Age Differential Charge, with $25 per day. $30 per day for larger vehicles (i.e. Yukon XL, Standard SUVs).

The minimum age for Prestige & Adrenaline Collections, as well as select high performance vehicles, is imperatively 25.

Authorized Operators

Acceptable Authorized Operators are automatically covered on the Rental Agreement.
Authorized Operators are:

  • The employer, employee or fellow employee of renter on company business, (when booking includes company Corporate Discount Number).
  • The spouse or domestic partner of Hertz Number One Club Gold or Platinum members.
  • Authorized Operators do not have to be present at time of rental.
    There are no fees for Authorized Operators.

Additional Drivers

Individuals not automatically covered on the Rental Agreement as Authorized Operators noted above may be signed on as an "Additional Authorized Operator" (AAO).  AAO's must be present and may be signed on to the rental agreement at the time of rental or during the rental at any US corporate location.

Renter and each AAO must be present to sign Rental Agreement, present an acceptable credit card or debit card (if renting city accepts debit cards) in their own name, or a current round-trip ticket (air, train or bus), show valid driver's license, and must be a minimum of 20 years of age (18 in Quebec).  For those 20 through 24 the location's age differential will apply.

Additional Authorized Operators Fees

Costs can vary per location and is around $13.50 per day, maximum $189.00 per rental, for each Additional Authorized Operator.

Exceptions

No fee if both renter and Additional Authorized Operator are AAA/CAA members. 

No fee for drivers of physically impaired renters & not Costs can vary per location and is around $13.00 per day, maximum $91.00 per rental, for each Additional Authorized Operator.

Payment Policy - Credit Card

American Express / Mastercard / Carte Blanche / Diners Club / Discover / Hertz Card / JCB / Visa / Optima/Amex

Credit cards must have available credit, and debit/check cards must have available funds, for the estimated amount of rental charges plus up to $200.00 for any incidental charges in order to secure the rental.  For customers with a PC coupon, the estimated amount is the approximate total not including your promotion.

Payment Policy - Debit Cards

Eligible debit cards must have Visa or Mastercard logo. Use of a debit card to rent a vehicle is subject to a review of your credit history.

Please note that at the time of rental you will need to present (1) a current driver's license and (2) a valid credit or charge card in the renter's name.  At most Hertz locations in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Hertz will allow you to present certain debit/check cards in place of a credit or charge card.  (Note: confirmation of your reservation does not mean that your debit/check card is acceptable to Hertz.) When you have confirmed a booking, send us an email at info@vroomvroomvroom.com so we can check and we will follow up within 1 business day.

Deposit

Once you have a confirmed booking send an email at info@vroomvroomvroom.com we'll check it out for you, we'll answer in one business day.

Early Return

All Canadian Corporate locations:

If you return the vehicle more than 24 hours before scheduled return date / time, you will be subject to an early return fee of around $15.00 for sub-compact to fullsize vehicle groups or $25.00 for vehicle groups above fullsize.

Driving Restrictions

The renter will need to advise the rental counter if they intend to drive to the US.

Driving into the U.S. is permitted, however, you will need a copy of your rental agreement and will need to obtain a pass from the Border Guard, at time of entry. Advise counter upon arrival of your intent to cross the U.S. border and return to the renting location.

Canadian Customs and Excise Regulations prohibit Canadian residents from driving U.S. rental vehicles in Canada and/or returning to the U.S. When a Canadian resident rents a car in the U.S. and drives into Canada, he/she must obtain a Traveler's Vehicle Permit from Canadian customs.  The renter must then go to a Canadian Hertz location and exchange the U.S. car for a Canadian car within 24 hours. No intercity fees are applied for this exchange.

Fuel

Hertz has three refueling options available to meet your needs:

You may purchase a tank of gas from Hertz at time of rental and return the vehicle with as little gas as you prefer. Please be aware that we are unable to issue a refund for unused fuel.  However, this method eliminates the need for you to refuel the tank prior to returning.

You can let us refuel for you and only pay for the fuel required to replace the fuel you used, and for the service and convenience of refueling the tank.

You can stop and refuel the tank yourself, immediately prior to returning the vehicle.

Insurance Coverage Options offered by Hertz

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)

  •   Applies to all vehicle damage to Hertz rental car
  •   Don't have to file a claim with personal auto insurance for loss/damage to the Hertz vehicle
  •   No deductible for you to pay to Hertz  *May not apply to Canadian Licensee Locations 
  •   Applies to any size vehicle
  •   Applies regardless of who is at fault


When you purchase LDW, which is not insurance, you will not be held responsible for loss of or damage to the Hertz car, provided the loss or damage was not the result of any prohibited use of the car under the Rental Agreement or as otherwise provided by applicable law. Prices vary by location and car class.  Pricing of LDW for a specific rental will be provided at time of reservation from $29.99 to $35.00 per day which vary across locations.

Adding LDW after car is on rental
You may not change the option once the rental has begun, without returning the car and starting a new Rental Agreement. This will result in the contract being closed out and charges being assessed for the time you kept the vehicle (at least 1day minimum), and a new rental contract will begin.

If LDW is declined, you will be responsible for the full amount of the replacement value of the vehicle in case of damage to or loss of the vehicle during the rental.

Regardless of LDW being accepted or included, rentals may be subject to a non waivable excess / deductible as set out below for which you are responsible in the event of damage to, or loss of, the vehicle during the rental. Please check the various options at the location when picking up the vehicle.

If you choose to rely on your credit card for cover, we strongly recommend that you fully understand the terms and conditions of any cover provided by your credit card company before you decline any of our optional services.

Personal Effects Coverage (PEC) / Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)

Personal Accident Insurance and Personal Effects Coverage have a combined rate. They are not sold separately. PAI/PEC is not available at locations in the provinces of Alberta and Quebec.

Personal Effects Coverage (PEC)

Personal Effects Coverage (PEC) is optional insurance for the loss or damage to Personal Effects of the renter and any companions travelling together in the rented car.

The maximum coverage per person is $500.00 with a deductible of $25.00. Maximum coverage per rental of $1500.00 per person.

  • Personal items covered are insured both while in or out of the rental car.
  • Personal Effects Insurance will be paid in addition to any other homeowner's coverage.
  • If loss or damages occur, completion of claim form must accompany claim. Forms available at all Hertz Corporate locations.

All losses must be reported to the police and there must be signs of forcible entry. Property is valued at actual cash value and not replacement cost. A copy of the police report must accompany claim.

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) PAI is an optional coverage for any accident involving death or bodily injury during the car rental covering you and your
passengers.

You are covered for the duration of the rental in or out of the vehicle. Passengers are only covered while entering, occupying
or leaving the Hertz car.

Baby, Child and Booster Seats

Infant seat -This seat is for infants who are less than one year old and weigh up to 20 pounds or up to 9 kgs. Children are too large for this type of car seat if they weigh over 20 pounds/9 kgs or are longer than 26 inches/66 cms. Infant seats must be installed rear-facing.

Child seat – This is a convertible car seat to be used forward facing for children weighing 20-40 pounds or 8kgs-18 kgs and up to 40 inches/101 cms in height.

Booster seat -This is a belt-positioning high back booster seat to be used in the back seat for children who have outgrown a convertible car seat.  The belt-positioning booster seat must be used in seating positions equipped with lap and shoulder belts.  Children weighing 40-80 pounds or 18kg-36kgs should use these seats.

GPS
