LaGuardia Airport was established on the former site of the Gala Amusement Park in 1939. It can be found on the waterfront of Bowery Bay and Flushing Bay and is bordered by the neighborhoods of Astoria, Jackson Heights, and East Elmhurst. The airport combined with JFK International and Newark Liberty International, gave New York City the largest airport system in the country. It also ranked first in the world based on total flight operations and second in the world based on passenger traffic.

The history of LaGuardia Airport dates back to 1929 when the Gala Amusement Park was transformed into a private flying field. It was then called Glenn H. Curtis Airport taken from the founder of the U.S. aircraft industry, Glenn Hammond Curtis. The airport was later on renamed to North Beach Airport.
