Passengers going to Terminal 1 can take the underground tram until they reached the Blue and Red parking ramps. From there, they can take the elevator heading to the 2nd or 3rd floor.
Those going to Terminal 2, on the other hand, can go straight to the Ground Transport Center. It is located on the ground level of the Purple parking ramp just across the terminal building.

Apart from on-airport car rentals, there are also off-airport car rental companies that can be accessed via Terminal 1-Lindbergh Transit Center. It is located between the Blue and Red parking ramps. Snelling Speedway photo by Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board

Before the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) was established, the site where it stood was the former Snelling Speedway. The race track was transformed into an airport after declaring bankruptcy. It was then named to Speedway Field, but was later on changed to Wold-Chamberlain Field in 1921. The airport made its mark in aviation history when aviation tycoon Howard Hughes made a stopover there during his round the world expedition in 1938.

The name of the airport was changed to Minneapolis–St. Paul Metropolitan Airport/Wold-Chamberlain Field in 1944. After four years, they've replaced the word “Metropolitan” to “International”. The “Wold-Chamberlain Field” was dropped in 1948, thus the airport is now officially called Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport
Throughout the course of its 80-year operation, the airport has undergone a multitude of changes – from the first landing strip built in 1920 to the first passenger service offered in 1929. Lindbergh Terminal was opened in 1962 and it was designed to accommodate up to 4 million people in 1975. However, the number of people exceeded the projected number of passengers in 1967.

Due to the continuous passenger growth, a new legislature was passed in Minnesota in 1989. The Metropolitan Airport Planning Act included the Dual Track Airport Planning Process, which explored other ways of providing the needed air service capacity and facilities in Minnesota.
