Driving Across the U.S. Border into Mexico in a Rental Car

Crossing the US to Mexico border in a rental car banner

Are you planning to go on road trip to Mexico? Before you start your adventure, make sure to read some important information below if you are going to rent a car. VroomVroomVroom has compiled a list of things you need to know when crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

Which U.S. car rental companies allow drivers to cross the Mexican border?

Most major car rental companies allow their renters to drive the vehicle from the United States to Mexico. However, there are restrictions and only a few locations allow rental cars to cross the border.  Read the terms and conditions of our suppliers below or better yet, contact them directly if you are crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

What documents do I need to enter Mexico?

Before crossing the border of Mexico, all personnel must present a list of documents based on the country's Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements which was shared by the Bureau of Consular Affairs. Below are some of the documents you need to present:

  • Proof of citizenship for U.S. and Canadian tourists (e.g. valid passport and government-issued birth certificate)
  • Automobile insurance from a Mexican company
  • Government-issued tourist card
  • Entry permit at an INM office
  • Car rental documentation

Does my U.S. rental car insurance cover me in Mexico?

Unfortunately not, since U.S. automobile insurance is not valid in Mexico. You need to pay for Mexican Automobile Liability Insurance at the U.S. rental location. But note that this insurance is not available in Mexico. It can be purchased only in specific states in the U.S., such as Arizona, Texas and California. Furthermore, not all rental agencies authorize renters to take their cars into Mexico so it is advisable to call your car rental provider if they permit their vehicle and find out the restrictions.

Remember:

When crossing the Mexican border…

Unlike Canada, Mexico has more restrictions when it comes to driving a rental car across the border. Some companies only allow travel by rental vehicle of up to 250 miles south of the border. You also need to acquire an automobile insurance from a Mexican company since your U.S. insurance is not valid. That's why it is important to coordinate with your provider and read their policies.
