Five Things You Must Do in West Henrietta

West Henrietta, New York (population 1,500), is 7 miles south of Rochester and 65 miles east of Buffalo.

1. Historic-site districts: Founded in 1818, the town has well-preserved historic homes in the East and West Henrietta, Cobblestone, Pioneer, Indian, Children's, Genesee Valley, Mortimer, Early Settlers and Railroad districts.

2. Parks: Tinker Nature Park and Hansen Nature Center offer a variety of activities for all ages. The Bushman and Roberts Cabins in Veterans Memorial Park can be rented for a weekend stay.

3. Rochester Institute of Technology: This renowned institute has a beautiful, large campus with many events that fill students' needs and those of the West Henrietta community. The National Technical Institute for the Deaf was built on the R.I.T. campus to provide classes and opportunities for deaf students. The Rochester metropolitan area serves the largest deaf population in the country.

4. Genesee County Museum and Village: Southwest of town, this living history museum is the largest in New York and one of the largest in the nation. The Genesee Country Nature Center includes 175 acres featuring five miles of hiking trails through woodlands, wetlands, and meadows. A stroll among the 68 restored and fully furnished buildings reveals how a log cabin settlement grew into a bustling community. The Carriage Museum has a range of horse-drawn carriages from the 19th and early 20th centuries. At the Silver Base Ball Park, crowds have enjoyed base ball (as it was spelled in the 1800s) for nearly 200 years. The museum brings 19th century base ball to life with exhibition games in costume. The facility also includes thirteen heirloom gardens.

5. George Eastman House: As the world's preeminent museum of photography, Eastman House cares for and interprets hundreds of thousands of photographs encompassing the full history of the medium. Noted collections include the Gabriel Cromer Collection of early French photography acquired in 1939; the Alden Scott Boyer Collection, which contains important 19th century British photographs; a very large collection of daguerreotypes by the Boston studio of Southworth and Hawes; and the Lewis Walton Sipley “American Museum of Photography” Collection. Visitors may also tour the restored mansion and gardens, home to the founder of the Eastman Kodak Company.
