Helpful Tips for Renting a Car with Kids

Traveling with Kids in the US guide banner

For those of you whose adventures come with kids in tow, VroomVroomVroom has compiled a few important tips for what you need to consider when your book a car rental with your little ones. Read the below information and checklist to make sure you all have a safe ride and memorable vacation.

What's the best option?

Think about how many people are traveling with you and how far you are going. You may think a hatch will be fine for a family of four, but if you've got three weeks of travel ahead you may need more space for luggage and body bags. Go supersize on your car rental if you can afford it. Book with VroomVroomVroom to find a rental car that will suit your budget and needs. There are plenty of top vehicles to choose from - everything from an economy-sized Chevrolet to a full size Ford Escape and even an 8-seater family van. Check out our Before Booking page to learn more.

Can I rent a child seat and add it in my booking?

Absolutely. If you are traveling with your kid and don't want to bring a car child seat, you can rent one through us. Keep in mind though that child seats can only be added once you have made a booking, and once you have your reservation number, you can either contact your supplier directly, our Customer Care Team can do it for you. Note that the supplier will require the child ages for seats and that we can process your request within 24 hours. To know more on how much to add child seats, click here.

Which type of seat is right for my child?

In the U.S., it is recommended that your kid rides in a child safety seat that is just right for his or her size and age. The three most common types of child car seats are infant, child and booster. VroomVroomVroom has compiled a quick guide to help you understand the process of adding a child seat to a car rental booking. Read Child Seats to gather more information.

How to keep my kids entertained?

To beat the boredom and keep them entertained, make sure to pack a bag of electronic goodies. In case your rental car doesn't have the latest bluetooth and iPod interface capabilities then you must bring some of the best travel gadgets with you such as gaming consoles, portable DVD player and headphones plus some travel toys. Don't forget to pack some snacks and make stops as little kids enjoy playing and running.

Are rental cars in the US insured?

It is extremely important to be aware of potential damage that you're covered (or not covered) for. Think about your family especially your little ones when on a road trip. In the USA, rental cars are not insured, which means that local renters generally rely on their personal car insurance, credit card or travel insurance to cover them. Note that without any of these, renters have the option to buy insurance products with the car rental company. These include: Collision Damage Waiver, Personal Accident Insurance and Supplemental Liability Insurance. Learn more about the Car Rental Insurance for Non Residents.
