Known in its early French stages as Lafource-des-Chitimachas, Donaldsonville is located in Ascension Parish from Louisiana and it is also the county seat. Donaldsonville can be found on the banks of the Mississippi River and has a population of almost 8000 people on an area of 2.5 square miles. Donaldsonville was established in 1806 when land owner William Donaldson paid architect Barthelemy Lafon to make the plans of a new town. The new town acted as a capital for the state of Louisiana in times when New Orleans was considered too noisy. Donaldsonville is also home of famous people like jazz musician Joe Oliver, nicknamed King, former governor of the state – Henry Johnson, writer Vinnie Tortorich and saxophonist Plas Johnson.

River Road African American Museum
is one of the greatest museums in town. The museum was opened in 1994 and is dedicated to Africans and Afro-Americans that were slave or free and had had an important role in the development of the region. The museum has a great array of collections about black inventors, jazz singers and African American political leaders from the area of Louisiana. Another important exhibition is related to the free Afro-Americans in the region. The memorabilia was all donated from families and plantations in the state.

Donaldsonville can be admired downtown Donaldsonville and are an important part of the history of the town and of the heritage, being the oldest buildings of this type in the United States of America. Some of them are from the early 1870s.
