Driving Tips and Road Information for Visitors to the United States

USA Driving Tips Guide for Visitors in the USA

Are you new to driving in the United States? If you are visiting and planning on renting a car, it is important to familiarize yourself with the rules of the road, and ensure you have a basic understanding of US traffic laws. While many laws may be similar to those that you are used to, you may also notice a few differences. Here is some advice from VroomVroomVroom to help you enjoy a safe road trip in the States.

How fast can you drive in America?

In most states, the speed limit is 65mph except where signs show slower or faster speeds. Distances and speed limits are measured in miles per hour (mph). Remember that states with wide open freeways usually have higher speed limits. On the other hand, smaller states with higher populations and busier freeways have the slower maximum speed limits.

Are seat belts required in all 50 states?

Nearly all states require the driver and front passengers to wear seat belts, except in New Hampshire, where only passengers under the age of 18 must buckle up. Note that seat belt laws for adults may vary from state to state.

What states is it illegal to talk on cell phone while driving?

States like California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Washington, Hawaii, Georgia, Maryland, Delaware, New Hampshire, Oregon, Connecticut, Vermont, Nevada, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and West Virginia prohibit all drivers from using hand-held cell phones while driving. Keep in mind that there are various laws that regulate the use of mobile phones.

    Important:

Be aware of the driving rules and regulations

Be wary that each of the 50 states has its own traffic laws and regulations. In most cases, laws are the same, but some states have slightly different rules. Before booking your rental car, make sure to ask your supplier if there are any special driving rules in the state you are  visiting. You may want to do some research or check a tour book for any special driving rules in each state if you are planning to drive in multiple states.
