Big Stone Gap is a beautiful city in Wise County, Virginia, in the United States of America. With a population of 5000 people living in an area of 12 kilometers squared, the community of Big Stone Gap also bears several nicknames like Meneral City and Three Forks. The actual name - Big Stone Gap was given in honor of the valley between the city and Appalachia City. The city gained fame thanks to Adriana Trigiani, a writer who published a series of novels dedicated to Big Stone Gap. Other important residents include professional football players and brothers Thomas Jones and Julius Jones, actor and writer CC Swiney and Miss America 1993 - Leanza Cornett. The Trail of the Lonesome Pine Outdoor Drama is the oldest running play in Virginia. The story is set in the area where Big Stone Gap is located and depicts the drama lived by the people that discovered coal for the first time in the Appalachian Mountains and the dramatic changes of their lives after the discovery. The play is great and it would be a shame not to see it. It will also help you understand better the culture of Big Stone Gap.
